Question by Clarita Canela: How does a piano tuner use a tuning fork to adjust a piano wire to a certain fundamental frequency?
How does a piano tuner use a tuning fork to adjust a piano wire to a certain fundamental frequency?

It’s a physics question and for some reason I can’t get it through my head. Someone please explain it to me. I’d really appreciate it.

Answer by billrussell42
They use beat frequencies between the fork and the wire. For example, if the fork oscillates at 440 Hz, and the piano note at 441 Hz, there will be an audible beat note at the difference, 1 Hz. If the note is supposed to be 440 Hz, the tuner adjusts the tension while hitting the key until the beat note disappears.

Other methods, if the note is supposed to be 445 Hz, the tuner counts the beat notes and checks for a 5 hz beat note, ie, 5 per second.

You can also work with harmonics, and do other tricks to adjust various keys.

Question by breathe: Piano players/teachers: What are ways to help my daughter curve her fingers while playing the piano?
My daughter is a beginner piano student (she is 4), and I’m trying to help her curve her fingers while she plays. She will curve them great until she actually presses down the keys, and then the go flat at the first knuckle. Do you have any ideas to help build finger strength so she can keep her fingers curved while she plays? Thanks in advance!

Best answer:

Answer by Josie B
I would say that finger strength just comes from practice, though I’m not a teacher of the instrument.

My piano teacher used to have a small-ish wax apple on top of the piano and every time my hands lost shape she’d make me put my hand around the apple in order to remind myself of what I was aiming for.

Not sure if this helps but perhaps you could find a similar object and do the same?

If i think of anything else I’ll edit back. Good luck :)

Question by BlackyJackie: How do you compare piano notes to a kalimba?
I’m really not sure how to play my brand new kalimba, and I’ve heard that the notes are similar to a piano. Can anybody tell me if I can look at piano notes and play them on the piano?
(Or, can anybody tell me the piano notes (ABCDEFG) on a 10-note kalimba?
